Robert L. Virgil was a General Partner in the Retail Investment Firm of Edward Jones from 1993-2006, with responsibility for management development. He retired as a General Partner at the end of 2006.

Virgil was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on August 26, 1934. He received a B.A. from Beloit College in 1956. Following two years in the U.S. Army, he entered Washington University in St. Louis where he received an MBA in 1960, a DBA in 1967 and an honorary Doctor of Laws in 2009.

From 1960-1993, Virgil was a faculty member in accounting of the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis. He was Dean of the Olin School from 1977-1993. He served as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs from 1974-75 and Executive Vice Chancellor for University Relations from 1992-93. At various times he was on leave from Washington University to be a faculty resident with Arthur Andersen & Co., and a visiting professor at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College and at the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. Virgil is Trustee Emeritus of Washington University in St. Louis.

Virgil was a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank from 1983-89 and its Chair from 1988-89.
